Issues: Population

Our burgeoning population has increased the dangers and multiplied them many times. A long time ago, we escaped from predation altogether. In the twentieth century most children have escaped deadly childhood diseases. Living in cities has enabled public health agencies to clean the water and this one factor has done more to avoid disease than any other. This has extended our expected average lifespans. At this point, we are currently exceeding the carrying capacity of our planet.

"Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases that we do not understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with resources we possess.
What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victim."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
